The first feeling that you have when you read this poem is a sense of mystery associate at a little bit of scary.
There’s no progression in the text, nothing happened but you seem hypnotized by the iambic tetrameter.
Death and depression are the topics of the poem. It seems like that the only way to be happy is to pass away that it’s stay in this snowy and comfortable woods .
There are two way that the protagonist can keep: he can decide to
pretend to live in the civilized world or to stay in the woods and throw away all of his problems.
Death is often described with a negative sense but it isn’t always like that.
He can be fascinating and stay in his harms can be like staying in the womb*. The snow is like the maternal warmth
*2 : comfortable and warm. At a first impact you think that snow is freezing and cold but in this poem it appear warm and it gives a sense of protection.
Some words belong to two different contents; In the image that I created I have underlined some words in two dissimilar colors: the red ones belong to the content of the Nature and the blue ones belong to the Civilization’s content. The author gives horse possibility of thinking so I decided to put the animal in the Civilization’s content.
I found an incoherent passage in which the protagonist describes a quite landscape
*3 but at the same time he says that he heard the sound of the harness bells. These last, returning to the context “maternal warmth”, are like the muffled sounds that we suspect that a baby hear when he’s in the womb.
I think that the last phrase of the poem save us from Death. We have some responsibilities about some people that depend of us.
Now I report you some worlds of a song:
“I shot for the sky,
I’m stuck on the ground
so why do I try?
I Know I’m gonna fall down.”
I recommended you to listen
Down by Jason Walker while you read the poem because I think that its lyrics could be a possible interpretation of protagonist’s thoughts.
Hope you liked my report,
à la prochaine,
bye =)
